Toni Magee, Hairstylist

Southern charm combined with a great sense of humor and beauty is what makes Toni an Urban Retreat favorite.

Toni has been cutting and styling hair for 35 years and says most of her clients have been coming to her for the past 27 years that she’s been in Houston. This obviously speaks wonders about her skill-set and personality. As stylist Juan Seneriz told me in my interview with him, 80% of this job is your personality. Just from talking to Toni, I could see how much her customers probably get a kick out of just chatting with her as she styles their hair. Men haircuts start at $53 and women cut and styles start at $80. Toni works Tuesday- Friday 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. and she is almost always booked! I know this because it took me three rescheduled appointments before I met with her. Her customers obviously come first (hence the rescheduling) so that’s a great thing for her customers and I can definitely understand that. Toni specializes in men’s haircuts and a technique called the Sebring cut. The Sebring cut is a method of cutting the hair in even layers which allows it to grow out evenly. This way it’s not as noticeable when you’ve missed your appointment with Toni. Although I have a feeling that very few of Toni’s customers miss their appointments. Yes, she’s that charming and that booked. That sweet southern accent is just a bonus.

Toni has been in Houston for 27 years old but is originally from Shreveport, LA and says she goes back almost every weekend to spend time with her family. A family of hairstylists makes for fabulous family functions; Toni’s mother was a hairstylist as well as 2 of her 3 sisters. That’s a house full of curlers! Toni currently lives in Fulcher, TX and loves antique shopping and bookstores. Toni is married with 2 sons but surprisingly doesn’t cook much. Bummer. I was sure I was going to get a gumbo or jambalaya recipe out of her. She says with not much time to cook, she prefers to go out to dinner and her favorite restaurant is Houston’s on Westheimer (we discussed our love for their spinach artichoke dip).
