Kelly Kana, Hair Stylist

Kelly Kana is a stylist that I would want styling my hair after a long day at the office or dealing with a rambunctious group of children. As you can tell from my writing, I’m pretty self absorbed. It’s an ugly, nasty trait of mine. I call it the Tyra Banks syndrome. When I’m interviewing someone and they bring something up, I immediately tell an anecdote of a similar situation that I’ve experienced, reverting the attention and conversation back to me. It’s horrible, I know. I say this to say, sometimes, it’s OK to be a little self absorbed and have someone listen to only you after a tough day. Occasionally this person is your stylist, massage therapist, nail tech, etc. because your best friend is busy or your husband’s at work. So as I began talking to Kelly recently, I realized if she were my stylist, she’d know all of my deep, dark secrets. Kelly is laid-back and easy to talk to, which I think are much-needed traits for stylists to have in addition to their fantastic skill-set.

Kelly is from the Woodlands, which I think is close enough to be considered an honorary Houstonian. She’s been a stylist for 5 years and at Urban Retreat for only 3 months and has quickly fallen in love with the atmosphere of the Salon, her clients, and co-workers. Kelly specializes in coloring, extensions, and Balayage highlights. Balayage is a French hair coloring technique designed to create very natural-looking highlights that grow out without developing noticeable roots. What a great technique! The French really do contribute all things fabulous don’t they? Kelly is always interested in learning new skills and has just finished an Alfaparf coloring class to learn even more coloring techniques. Kelly’s hours are Tuesday- Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Thursday 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Hair cuts start at $90 and highlights begin at $125.

Kelly enjoys reading and is currently reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. You can find her having brunch at Shade in the Heights and hanging out with friends on the weekend. Her new favorite restaurant is Les Givrals Kahve, a Vietnamese restaurant on Washington Ave. She also loves Mexican and Italian food and cooks delicious chicken parmesan. Kelly is looking forward to Urban Retreat’s new location as well as anxiously anticipating the arrival of her niece. I asked Kelly her favorite place to shop and of course it’s Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom’s. What girl doesn’t love Neiman’s? Sounds like Juicy Couture onesies are in her neice’s future.
